Overview Of The Department

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, established in 1986, offers UG and PG and research (leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D.) programs. The B.E. program is an Autonomous under VTU(2007) and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) during 2008 and re-accredited during the years 2012 & 2015. The Department practices outcome based education since 2014. The Department has adequate infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratories and other supporting facilities to provide enhanced learning environment.The Department boasts of well qualified teaching faculty with rich research, teaching and industrial experience.The Department has excellent placement track record in reputed industries with an average of 80 – 85% placement of eligible students over the years. The Department regularly conduct Audit courses, and special courses on advanced topics, to bridge the gap between the curriculum and the need of the industry. The Department offers M.Tech programs in Computer Science & Engineering and in Software Engineering (Autonomous under VTU) from the academic year 2003-04 and 2015-16 respectively.

  • 1. Graduates will be capable of practicing principles of Computer Science & Engineering, Mathematics and Scientific investigation to solve the problems that are appropriate to the discipline.

  • 1. Engineering knowledge:Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • 4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • 5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • 6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • 7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • 8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • 9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.

This centre was started with an intention to provide a facility to carry out teaching and research work in the field for the interested faculty members and students of NMAMIT. This centre is a part of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering.

M.Tech And Doctoral Programmes

M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering was started during the academic year 2003-04. This program is aimed to empower the students with the recent developments and advanced knowledge in various frontier areas of computer science and engineering. The students are given option to concentrate on specializing in one or more streams within computer science from the first semester itself with elective courses. During the beginning of first semester itself, students are mentored to identify, formulate, review, research literature and analyze complex engineering problems in the broad domain of computer science.

M.Tech in Software Engineering Programme was started during academic year 2015-16. This program is aimed at equipping the graduates, with advanced conceptual knowledge, technical skills and ability to pursue research in the areas of software quality, engineering, and project management. This program enables to master in software related courses such as Software Project Planning and Management, Software testing methodology, Enterprise Application Programming, Advanced Algorithms, Software Metrics and Quality Assurance. This program also helps to learn and feel the importance to software project management as leveraging tool to grow higher in software engineering ladder. Students have a wide range of electives to choose and work for one year on industrial project. Right from first semester students are exposed to research culture, mentored by a Professor, leading towards pursuing Ph.D Work in future.

About The Club

The Association of Computer Engineers ( ACE ), a club in NMAMIT Nitte, has been formed by the students of Computer Science and Engineering for the benefit of students with an intention to provide a platform to participate in co-curricular activities and to give opportunity to mingle with other students. The motive of this association is to bring out the hidden talent and to involve each member in various activities so that the youth exuberance should not be confined to class room only.
Since its inception, the association is fully engaged in many events. The main such events are as below
• Organising workshops on topics beyond syllabus or curriculum
• Celebration of Teachers day, Fresher’s day, festivals
• Cultural events and competitions

About The Club

The Computer Society of India(CSI) started in our college NMAMIT,NITTE in the year 2007. It aims at imparting technical knowledge and ethical responsibilities in the students through all its activities. It encourages and motivates students to organize and volunteer in various workshops,events to instill in them a sense of responsibility,confidence and determination. It also aims at personality development.Hands on workshops are conducted to make the students experience the latest trends. The theoretical knowledge obtained in the classes is used for the implementation,hence providing the practical knowledge to all. To keep the students updated about the recent technologies, technical talks are arranged. Every possible attempt is made, to make the students equipped with the best of the technical knowledge available to groom them into a perfectengineer.

About The Club

The Institution of Engineers (India), is the national organization of engineers in India. The Institution of Engineers (India) has more than one million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 114 centers or chapters in India and overseas; it is the world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in engineering and technology world. The Institution of Engineers (India) was established in 1920 in Kolkata, West Bengal and is acclaimed to have pioneered non-formal education in engineering. The Institution of Engineers (India) conducts an examination of its associate membership. This examination is considered to be on par with B.E. / B.Tech. When contemplated as an eligibility qualification to write competitive examinations like the Indian Civil Service, Indian Engineering Services, GATE, etc., and for employment in Government, public and private sectors in India. This qualification is recognized by the Ministry of HRD, government of India, as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. The Institution of Engineers (India) was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is currently headquartered in 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata. Our college has Institution of Engineers (India) student’s chapter for all the branches. About 1500 student members are there in this chapter. This chapter has been conducting branch level, Institution level and intercollegiate level technical programs.

Internet Of Things(IoT)

About The Club

The activities of Internet of Things were initiated in our college from Jan. 2015. Dr. D.K.Sreekantha, Professor from CSE Dept. was designated as IOT coordinator. Intel corporation, Bangalore has donated about 80 Intel Galileo Boards and funds Rs 3.5 Lakhs (2.0+1.5) to promote organizing the programmes and student project activities using these boards funds. The college has been conducting One year Audit Course for 3rd Year students of CSE, ISE, ECE branches since 2015. About 50 students are taking part in this course. Workshops, Invited Talks from Experts are organized for students time to time. Students are working on IOT related project in a teams to implement the project ideas. One staff mentor is assigned for each project team to guide the project and assess the project progress. At end of one year the project is evaluated by a panel and awarded grade card.
IOT Centre was established in March 2017 in ground floor of Civil Dept. to facilitate students to work on their projects even after college hours. IOT club was formed to encourage students of all streams and semesters to work on IOT ideas from March 2017. Students are participating in IOT project exhibitions and Hackathons like in Intel Rapid Prototyping Camps, State level Industrial IOT exhibition in Bantakal and NASSCOM Innovation Challenge competitions and short listed to final rounds since 2015. We would like to collaborate with professional IOT training institute and work on real time IOT projects in future.

The Department is strongly committed to impart innovative and quality technical education with high standards at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The staff of both teaching and non-teaching of the department is committed to prepare our students by providing the expertise and proficiency needed to thrive in our modern society.

The main goal of the Department is to provide an experiential learning opportunities like hands-on training, project-based courses, research projects, and internships which provide a solid foundation to work in interdisciplinary teams that invent the future for which the Department covers a wide spectrum of research in the area of Computer Science & Engineering led by 46 qualified and experienced team of faculty members.

In addition to state-of- the-art curriculum, more emphasis is placed on enriching the students learning experience by providing value added courses, Audit courses, skill development programs, and to participate in research activities through summer research internships.

I am confident that the Department is strongly prepared to face the new exciting challenges in this new digital era.

Major Activities Held By Various Clubs

The branch induction programme was organized on 31st August 2017 for the benefit of second year Computer Science and Engineering students of NMAMIT, Nitte. The programme started at 2:30 P.M in the presence of Vice Principal, Dr. I.R.Mithanthaya who was the Chief Guest. Head of the department, Dr. K R Udaya Kumar Reddy and ACE coordinator, Mr. Raghunandan K R along with the Chief Guest were seated on the dais. Ms.Vasundhara took over the formal ceremony. The President of ACE, Mr. B.S. Vishnu welcomed the gathering. The Chief Guest addressed the gathering. Dr. Uday Kumar Reddy addressed the second year students and gave inputs on:
1)Overall functioning of the department.
2)Strengths of the department.
3)Highly qualified faculty.
4)Audit courses and fast-track courses offered.
The Computer Science department magazine was released on this occasion by the Chief Guest. The magazine editorial team was congratulated for their hardwork.Vote of thanks was proposed by the Vice President of ACE Mr.Adarsh A.

The Computer Society of India, NMAMIT Student Branch celebrated the CSI Day on 10th March, 2017 .
The chief guest for the day was Prof.(Dr.)A.N. Parameswaran, Director, Industry-Institute Interaction Cell, Nitte Education Trust. The celebrations was presided by Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT.Dr Udaya Kumar Reddy, Head of Department Of CSE, Mrs Sharada U Shenoy, CSI Student Branch Counselor and CSI coordinators from CSE, ISE, MCA were also present. The whole week from 6th March to 11th March was marked as CSI week and conducted five other events apart from CSI day celebrations were held in that week. The events Code in Less – a coding competition, Logo Quiz, Treasure Hunt, Mock Interview and a technical talk on “Implementation of Data Structures: an Industry perspective”, by Mr. Ram Kumar from Robosoft Technologies Pvt Ltd Udupi.
The celebrations began with a prayer song by Ms.Pooja Prabhu , final year CSE student and a member of CSI, to invoke the divine blessings. Prof. Sharada U Shenoy, Student Branch Coordinator, CSI welcomed the gathering. Mr Vishwas Navada, Student Chairman, CSI, presented the overview of events conducted under CSI for the academic year 2016-2017.The chief guests were then given a floral welcome by the executive members of CSI. This CSI day celebrations was formally inaugurated by lighting of lamp . This was preceded by the prize distribution ceremony for various competitions conducted by CSI for the current academic year. The CSI yearly magazine, CSI Bytes was then released by our chief guest.Prof A.N. Parameswaran, the chief guest for the day addressed gathering. He spoke about computer-human metaphor and enlightened the students about various differences between human brain and the computer and also the unexplainable capacity of the computer. He then concluded his speech with a beautiful saying ” Weak brain revenge, Strong brain forgive but Intelligent brain ignores “.
Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT started his speech by congratulating the team behind the CSI magazine , CSI Bytes, for their hard work and dedication in publishing the magazine. He also mentioned his close bond with CSI and mentioned that his first trip outside India was sponsored by CSI. He then enlightened the students about the importance of being a perfectionist in programming, which is the major requirements of today’s industries. He also put light on the increasing need of students to have exposure to industrial practicality, rather than just theoretical studying. He concluded his speech by mentioning about the challenging situations at jobs and urged the students to grab the various opportunities given by CSI to become proactive and bring out the leader in them.
Dr Udaya Kumar Reddy, HOD Computer Science, then addressed the gathering. He spoke about how CSI is the largest society in the field of Computer Science. He encouraged the students to make use of opportunities given by CSI to grow further. He concluded his speech by congratulating the members of CSI for their efforts and achievements.
The formal function then came to an end with a vote of thanks by Dr Uday Kumar Shenory, Staff Coordinator of CSI. This was followed by a demo by Pradeep B, third year CSE student on Internet Of Things. The celebration witnessed an audience in large numbers. Students and Staff of CSE, ISE and MCA department were a part of the celebration. Refreshments was served at the end of the formal function.

Data Mining and Analysis using R Programming” by Mr.Roshan Fernandes and Ms.Anisha P Rodrigues conducted on 21st and 22nd January,2017.

The IEI along with ISTE Students’ Chapter had organized an workshop on the topic “ DATA MINING AND ANALYSIS USING R PROGRAMMING ” which was held on 21st and 22nd of January 2017. It was an honour to have with us Mr. Roshan Fernandes and Ms. Anisha P Rodrigues , Dept. of CSE, NMAMIT as our Resource Person. The workshop was conducted in the presence of Ms Pallavi K N ,Staff Co-ordinator of IEI and ISTE. Around 50 students had registered for the workshop. Ms. Nishmitha J R welcomed the gathering.
The two day workshop was well organized and was conducted in the department labs. The first day of the workshop was conducted by Mr. Roshan Fernandes. The session included concepts of Data Mining and how it was used to analyse the data. It also included how one can use Data Mining & analytics tools in various applications.
Second day of the workshop was handled by Ms. Anisha P Rodrigues. The session started with the introduction to R Programming. She also briefed to the students the usage of different R commands and its applications.Introduction to concepts of Image Analysis was also taught.
Participants were provided with the certificates. Snacks and Lunch was also provided to the participants. The vote of thanks was rendered by Ms Ashwija R Rai.
