The Department of MCA was established in 1993-94 with a student intake of 30. The current sanctioned intake is 90. The program is recognised by the AICTE and affiliated to the VTU.

The core subjects of this program are designed to introduce students to the various areas of Computer Science and Engineering such as computer programming, software engineering, computer networking, database management, computer graphics and system analysis. The well-balanced course significantly emphasizes on planning, designing and building of complex commercial application software and system software. The course also places equal importance on the functional knowledge in various areas.

The department has the following laboratories: Database Lab – Here, Oracle 10g is used as back-end and Visual Basic/Visual Age for Java as front-end ; the latest Java version is used at the Network Lab. Mini projects like Web Server, Proxy Server and Mail Server are developed using Java; the Unix Lab mainly focuses on system software concepts. Programs on Shell scripts, Lex and Yacc are executed in this lab; the Software Design Lab using Rational Rose Enterprise Suite of IBM Programming Lab is supported with softwares like C, C++ and Cobol to implement data structures & C, C++, Cobol mini projects. The Project Lab is well-equipped with the latest software and computer systems. Students are provided with facilities to develop projects on various platforms.

Companies like HP (STSD), Dell, Robosoft, Iminers, etc., have labs in the department equipped with the required servers, hardware and software, where the students work exclusively on projects provided by the companies in collaboration with employees from organizations.

The department has an extensive library with reference books and magazines and a good collection of CDs on state-of-the-art technology. The students have access to the central library which is well-stocked with books, IT related magazines, journals both national & international.

Project Work Training
The sixth semester students of the department undertake projects on live applications in companies and research organisations contributing to the improvement of quality and productivity with a conscious perspective through the application of computer concepts. The areas covered in projects include Software Engineering, Management, Object oriented analysis & design, Data mining, Image processing, Networking concepts and Management Information System ERP.

Industry-Institute Interaction
Students are encouraged to take up projects given by companies like HP, Dell, Robosoft Technologies Ltd., 3i-INFOTECH, Mascon IT, Iminers, Yashsoft Technologies, etc. The department has well equipped labs with the required servers, hardware and software, where the students work exclusively on the projects provided by the companies in collaboration with the employees from the organizations.

Job Opportunities
The fact that industries in India and abroad have been placing MCA students on a regular basis is testimony to the quality of the course and its students.

a) MCA graduates begin their career as junior programmers and grow at a fast pace to become systems analysts and project leaders. Since the course is also designed towards the research side, some students pursue higher studies while others seek entrepreneurial roles. b) Application areas include transaction processing (such as banking, stock exchange order processing) simulation, database management, e-commerce, design support and data communications, networking, embedded technologies etc.

The College arranges for campus interviews and on and off campus recruitment for students, who are prepared for placements right from the second semester onwards. The students of the MCA department have been successfully placed in reputed organisations like Infosys, Wipro, Intel, IBM, TCS, Honeywell, HP, Caritor, HCL, MDS, Accenture, ROBOSOFT, Tech Mahindra etc.

Pre-Placement Training Programme
Students are given extensive pre-placement training during the vacations. They are taught mathematics/accountancy, quantitative analysis & software skills and are trained in technical and management skills to handle computer applications and software problem solving situations and are prepared to face the campus recruitment process. The different areas covered are:
1. Quantitative Aptitude
2. Logical and Analytical Reasoning
3. Language Skill (Written)
4. Communication Skill
5. Technical-Basics of Computer, Operating System, C, C++, DS, etc.
6. Group Discussion
7. Personal Interview

The MCA Department regularly conducts seminars, workshops, special guest lectures, technical competitions, paper presentations, spot programming etc. throughout the academic year. At times, these are also organised in association with organizations like HP, Dell, TCS and IBM.

Recently, the department with assistance from Hewlett Packard organized an Open Conference focusing on Open Source related research and development. The objective of the conference was to encourage the student community in India to actively contribute to Open Source projects and to provide an opportunity for collaboration between universities and the industry in the area of Open Source development. The event involved participation both from the academia and the industry.

Extra-curricular activities
SAMCA: Students Association of MCA (SAMCA) is a students forum. SAMCA helps students to go beyond the parameters of classroom education. It organises extra curricular activities such as seminars, group discussions, technical quizzes and cultural programmes.

SAMCA organises SEMAPHORE, an inter-collegiate meet, every year. It provides the students with hands-on experience in event management calling for creativity, leadership, team work and innovativeness.

WINDOWS: Is a wall magazine where students can exhibit their literary talents

Professional society activities: MCA students participate in CSI and ISTE student chapter activities.

Entrepreneurship Development Cell(EDC): Students attend seminars organized by the EDC of the Institute funded by the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.
