3. An engineer for effective utilization of natural resources in biotechnology related industries.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
B.E in Biotechnology was introduced in 2002 to train the students in biological applications of Engineering principles. The plunge was taken being assured of assistance by sister institutions, KSHEMA- the K S Hegde Medical Academy that offers MBBS courses & the NGSM College of pharmaceutical sciences.
The B.E. programme in Biotechnology is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for a period of 5 years (2012-17). Research has been the tradition of the department. Faculty members of Biotechnology department have received research grants totalling Rs.1 crore 46 lakhs. Department has filed four patents based on research work.
The laboratories provide good work ambience with state of the art instruments to enable the students to carry out projects and acquire expertise in handling the instruments. The department has laboratories viz., Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biokinetics, Bioprocess Control and Instrumentation, Cell and Microbiology, Down Stream Bioprocessing, Enzyme Technology,Momentum transfer, Unit Operations, Upstream Bioprocessing and Genetic Engineering & Immunotechnology and Research Lab. The department has a library with growing collection of books. The department subscribes to journals like Indian journal of biochemistry and Biophysics, Journal of genetics, Biospectrum and many more. The department has a fully fledged modern computer centre mainly for studies in Bioinformatics with Wisconsin package, 100 Mbps LAN and internet onnectivity. A range of software packages for the use of students is also available.
The department is recognized as research center under VTU, Belagavi and 7 research scholars have registered for their doctoral programme. The faculties are actively involved in sponsored research projects funded by various organizations such as Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India; Department of Atomic Energy-Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Government of India and Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, Government of Karnataka. A pilot scale plant for Biodiesel production, demonstration and information dissemination has been established underBiotechnology Department funded by Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, Bengaluru.
The department is recognized as Centre of Innovative Science & Engineering Education (CISEE) in Biofuel Production by Vision Group on Science & Technology (VGST), Govt. of Karnataka.
The Biotechnology department is proud to have bright and talented students from diverse backgrounds. Students have won many prizes in various state level symposiums, conferences, extracurricular and co-curricular activities held by other institutes. Several project works carried out by students have fetched prizes and laurels. Some of the research outcomes of studentproject have been published in reputed national and international journals. The department also organizes visits to research laboratories and other related industries to enable students to broaden their view about the course. Students actively take part in sports and some students have represented the college at university level. The department has a technical association namedPHOENIX. Activities like paper presentation, seminars, debate, quiz are conducted by this association. The association brings out a newsletter ‘Phoenix speaks’ twice a year.
